Your charitable intentions: Plan to plan!

Keep Your Charitable Plan Current
Many individuals and families invest significant time creating a charitable plan that feels right. They establish a donor-advised or other fund at the community foundation, update IRA beneficiary designations so the fund receives proceeds, and outline the causes they want to support. Then life moves forward, and the plan often remains untouched for years, with the assumption that everything will work as intended.
The challenge is that charitable plans can outlive the paperwork. Family dynamics change. Attorneys and financial advisors retire. Organizations merge or shift direction. Donors’ priorities evolve. Even when charitable intentions remain strong, the documents behind them can quietly become outdated. This can create confusion later, especially for loved ones or advisors carrying out your wishes during a stressful time.
A simple solution is to review your charitable plan periodically, just as you would other key elements of your financial life. This does not require a full overhaul. It simply means confirming that what is documented still reflects your goals.
If you have a donor-advised fund at the Siouxland Community Foundation, an annual check-in with our team is a practical step. During that conversation, we can:
- Confirm that successor advisor designations are current and that those individuals understand and are willing to carry out your wishes.
- Evaluate whether leaving a portion of your fund to support the community foundation’s mission aligns with your long-term intentions.
- Verify that your attorney has included the correct fund name and language in your will or trust.
- Confirm that beneficiary designations on retirement accounts or life insurance policies correctly name your fund and that your advisors have copies for their records.
- Explore ways to involve children and grandchildren in charitable decision-making during your lifetime.
- Develop a brief statement of purpose to keep in the community foundation’s permanent file, explaining why certain causes matter to you and what you hope your giving will accomplish over time.
We are always happy to meet for these check-ins. The Siouxland Community Foundation is your home for charitable giving, and we are here to help. Even a short annual conversation can provide peace of mind and strengthen the lasting impact of your generosity.
