From success to significance: Opportunities after a major financial milestone

Major milestones can change how we think about what comes next. Retirement, an inheritance, selling a business or real estate, exercising stock options, or another significant financial event can create an opportunity to pause and plan thoughtfully.

For many people, these moments bring a new focus to the causes, organizations, and communities that have shaped their lives. Recent high-profile philanthropy following the sale of the Seattle Seahawks offers one example, while others simply reach a point where they have the financial resources to act more intentionally on their charitable goals.

Planning early can give you more options. Consider:

  • Establishing a donor-advised fund to set aside charitable dollars now while deciding which organizations to support over time.
  • Creating a designated fund to provide lasting support to specific organizations you care about, either during your lifetime or through your estate.
  • Adding a field-of-interest fund to support a particular community need or an unrestricted fund that allows the community foundation to respond to Siouxland’s greatest opportunities over time.

If you own a private business, timing is especially important. Establishing charitable arrangements before a sale is underway may provide significant capital gains advantages, so involve your tax advisors and the Siouxland Community Foundation early in your exit planning.
