Tax deduction? What tax deduction?

With all the recent buzz about new federal laws and what they might mean for charitable deductions, it’s important to remember something we see every day here in Siouxland: most people don’t give because of tax breaks. They give because they care.
Compassion, empathy, a sense of responsibility, or a deep belief in a cause—these are the true drivers of philanthropy. Yes, tax incentives can play a role, but they’re rarely the main motivation. What really inspires generosity are the personal connections and values that shape our lives.
That’s why we’ve always loved this research from the Greater Good Science Center, which reinforces what we see right here in our community:
Generosity is human nature.
Giving isn’t just cultural—it’s part of who we are. Studies show that generosity is built into our biology, activating the brain’s reward pathways much like joy, love, or laughter. Simply put, giving feels good.
Philanthropy benefits both giver and receiver.
Volunteering or offering support—whether that’s time, resources, or encouragement—has been linked to greater well-being, stronger self-esteem, and even longer life expectancy. Locally, we see this every day as donors and volunteers share that they feel just as blessed by giving as the people they’re helping.
Charitable values can be nurtured.
Generosity grows through both personal values and community influence. Social connections, cultural norms, and a sense of reciprocity all play a role. In Siouxland, that “contagious generosity” is visible across neighborhoods, schools, churches, and families. When one person gives, others are inspired to do the same.
If you love supporting your favorite causes regardless of what’s happening in Washington, you’re in good company. At the Siouxland Community Foundation, we are honored to work with hundreds of individuals and families whose giving comes from a place of genuine care for others. Together, those gifts create long-lasting, positive impact right here in the community we all call home.
