Giving in Uncertain Times

Uncertain times naturally cause people to pause and reassess. Whether the uncertainty comes from market shifts, employment changes, health concerns, or a broader sense of unpredictability, it is common to question what this means for your financial plan. For many donors, that uncertainty extends to charitable giving. Should you slow down, stop, or continue?

There is no single right answer. The Siouxland Community Foundation will never suggest giving beyond what feels sustainable. For many donors, however, the choice is not simply “give as usual” or “stop entirely.” Often, the best approach is to adjust your giving in a way that preserves generosity while aligning with your current circumstances.

We encourage you to connect with our team to evaluate strategies that fit your situation. For example:

• Adjust the pace. Instead of one large gift, you might spread contributions across the year or over multiple years.
• Adjust the amount. Some donors move from larger one-time gifts to steady recurring gifts. Others make an early-year gift when confidence is strong and reassess later.
• Narrow the focus. You may choose to continue supporting a core group of organizations while reducing additional gifts.
• Respond to urgent needs. Some donors prioritize immediate needs identified by the community foundation and return to broader giving later.

If you have established a fund at the community foundation, flexibility is often one of its greatest benefits. A donor-advised fund allows you to contribute when it makes sense for your situation and recommend grants over time. Other types of funds can provide more structure while still allowing you to respond to changing community needs.

Uncertainty can also be an opportunity to revisit why you give. Many donors find that charitable giving is one of the most grounding aspects of their lives when circumstances feel unsettled. It reinforces values, strengthens community connections, and supports organizations serving those who may be struggling most.
