BACKGROUND: The Solid and Wattenberg Scholarship was established in 2020. Mary Sharon Wells (Wattenberg) was compelled to begin a fund to honor her late husband, David E. Wattenberg and his mother, Eva (Solid) Wattenberg. The Solid family owned farmland in the Sloan, Iowa area. The scholarship will help graduating seniors from Westwood High School pursue a post-secondary education.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating high school seniors from Westwood High School in Sloan, Iowa, in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited college/university to obtain a 2 or 4-year academic degree.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from Westwood High School in Sloan, Iowa. Applicants must be pursuing a degree at a 2 or 4 year college or university. No GPA requirement.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as involvement while in high school, extracurricular activities, community service activities, essay and work experience.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: minimum $1,000, not renewable.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by the February 1 deadline and must include the following:
• Completed online application
• Essay
• Official high school transcript
