BACKGROUND: The Joshua M. Lester Memorial Scholarship is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. This scholarship fund was established in 2013 by family and friends in his memory. Joshua graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School. He will always be remembered for his contagious smile and knowing how to make things better for others.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist Bishop Heelan Catholic High School graduating seniors in realizing their dreams of going to college to pursue a post-secondary education.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City, Iowa; and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, participation in extracurricular school activities, community service, work history, financial need, and essay evaluation.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,000, not renewable.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by February 1 deadline and must include the following:
• Completed online application
• Two (2) “Character Counts” recommendations
• Essay
• Official high school transcript
