John Kounas Academic Excellence in Science Scholarship

BACKGROUND: The John Kounas Academic Excellence in Science Scholarship was established by Dale and Mari Rude in 2024 and is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation, headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited college/university to obtain a 4-year academic degree. In honor of Mr. Kounas, applicants must be pursuing a career in the field of science, mathematics or related field.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (out of 4.0), be pursuing a career in the field of science, mathematics or related field, and be graduating seniors from Westwood High School in Sloan, IA.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, participation in school/extracurricular activities and essay.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: minimum $1,000, not renewable.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by the February 1 deadline and must include the following:
• Completed online application
• Essay
• Official high school transcript
